Project House @1QRW serves as a community shared space located at the shop space at 1 Queen’s Road West in Sheung Wan, the former “Yau Kee Hop”. We hope to connect the community of Sheung Wan and provide a comfortable breathing space by weaving heritage, community and culture through creative happenings. By leveraging this iconic shop space and bridging local community resources, we intend to foster and strengthen the Sheung Wan community network and resilience.
Project House @1QRW aspires to be a gathering space for Sheung Wan kaifongs, a place to meet and connect with one another via both regular services and thematic activities.
Project House @1QRW is co-operated by Caritas Community Centre - Caine Road and onebite Social. This project is co-funded by ZeShan Foundation and Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation, and in collaboration with the Lion Rock Heritage Foundation.
About Project House @1QRW
Project House was kickstarted in August 2017 by onebite Social, using a pop-up strategy to tackle the phenomenon of ground-level vacant shops and the social demand for community spaces, transforming the temporary space via simple design elements and curated themes to meet community needs.
Two pop-ups were held at Tai Nan Street in Sham Shui Po and Hennessy Road in Wan Chai in 2017, and in 2018 and 2019 at Tai Yuen Street in Wanchai and Aberdeen. After a pause during the pandemic, we made a comeback at 1 Queen’s Road West in Sheung Wan in the summer of 2023.
Project House @1QRW started in July 2023, and has since gone through stages 1.0 and 2.0, which allowed us to get to know the Sheung Wan community and understand their needs post-pandemic. As we explore a new model to connect space with the community, it will be relaunched in August 2024 with renewed programmes and happenings.

In the summer of 2023, Project House @1QRW turned the vacant streetfront shop at 1 Queen’s Road West into a pop-up community space for 7 weeks. First time stationing in Sheung Wan, we hoped to explore the possibility post-pandemic, and create a comfortable space for the community to rest and connect.
By collaborating with over 40 partners, we received overwhelming support, welcomed nearly 2,000 kaifongs and participants, and organised over 100 events. Such intensive operation revealed a huge yearning for third space among kaifongs across age groups and backgrounds. Through our daily interaction and observation, we also had the opportunity to discover unmet needs and start discovering resources lying within the community.

With the support of Oxfam Hong Kong, Project House 2.0 was able to reopen in November 2023 and operated until April 2024. With Lion Rock Heritage Foundation’s discounted rent, we were able to stay at the iconic historic tenement building at 1 Queen's Road West.
Project House 2.0 was curated by onebite Social, with our main partner Caritas Caine Road Community Centre. The biggest difference between 1.0 and 2.0 is that this edition did not have a jampacked schedule. On the contrary, we focused on regular activities and services, and developed two exciting social experiments based on our experience from 1.0 - the Sheung Wan Sewing Squad and Community Nanny Team. We hope to create a homey space where Sheung Wan’s residents can feel comfortable and at ease, reimagining the possibility of a third space.
About Yau Kee Hop
Project House @1QRW is located on the ground floor of 1 Queen's Road West, a pre-war tenement building known as "Yau Kee Hop." This iconic corner building, standing tall in Sheung Wan for over a century, sits at the junction of Queen's Road West, Possession Street, and Bonham Strand. Due to its historical significance and architectural features, the building was recognised as a Grade III historic building by the Hong Kong's Antiquities and Monuments Office in January 2010.
According to available tax rates records, the building was approximately completed in 1926. However, land transaction records suggest that it might have been constructed even earlier in 1913, thus more than a century old. Yau Kee Hop the roast meat shop is a long-time collective memory of the area, possibly starting in 1916 according to the descendants. During the restoration of the building, slogans of Ka Wo Distillery were unveiled on the columns, revealing its short operation on the ground floor. Yau Kee Hop closed down in 1987, followed by various shops such as convenience store, groceries, clothing, and was purchased by current owner 5 years ago.
